Water avens is a native wetland plant so can only be grown in the pond if the soil surface remains slightly proud of the water surface. Supplied bare-rooted.
Top tip: Will flower all through the season if old flower stems are cut back regularly. The lovely amber, bell-shaped flowers provide an early/late pollen source for bumble bees.
Flowers: Late April/September
Height of plant: Leaves grow to 10cm, flower stems readily reach up to 30cms.
Propagation: The plant produces multiple of bunches of thin roots that grow from a woody stem. Side shoots readily root where they touch the soil and can be broken off for re-potting.
How to plant: Plant into any 5lt planting basket filled with heavy garden loam or Westland Aquatic Soil. Place on a shelf in the pond that is deep enough for the water to cover the soil to the recommended depth. Fill the planting basket to a depth so that the crown of the plant is level with the rim. Hold the plant securely and fill in with soil all around the roots, pressing the soil down very firmly until the planting crate is almost filled to the brim. For aesthetic purposes, the soil can then be top dressed with no more than 1cm of pea gravel.
Recommended planting depth: This a moisture loving plant so plant into reliably wet soil but not under water. Best planted with the soil surface just above the water surface.
